Superfund Sites Next Door

NEWBURGH, NEW YORK

New York has two communities that have been impacted by the discarded chemicals which has contaminated water supplies. The City of Newburgh can attribute the water contamination to a Military base that used firefighting foam containing Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid which has been linked to medical problem such as cancer. Based on this location was deemed a superfund site. The EPA is responsible for this program which provides funding for cleaning up contaminated land and water in order to protect the environment and the public.

HOOSICK FALLS, NEW YORK

Hoosick Falls on the other hand can attribute their contamination to Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Plant that operates in the community. This Plant also has contaminated this communities water source with Perfluorooctanesulfonic Acid. This location is still in the process of becoming a superfund site.
